There is much humour and heart in this gorgeous story of a little burlesque dancing peach named Dita, whose dream is to dance on the stage. When Dita gets the chance to audition for world renowned dancer Ms Von Teese, will all her dreams come true? This beautifully written and illustrated #picturebook delivers the important messages of being true to yourself and having the courage to give things a go. This story also empowers its young audience to understand that we may not always come first or get noticed - but that is not to say we are not good enough. This can be a difficult lesson to learn - not just for kids but for adults too! We learn through Dita’s story the importance of practicing self-love and acceptance, and engaging in our craft because we love it, not because we are trying to please others. The narrative of this story is uplifting and joyous, and sparkles with hope. The flowing rhythm and rhyme ensures this book is a lot of fun to read aloud, imparting its important messages in a playful way. The warm expressive illustrations by Vikki Chiu are rendered in gorgeously peachy shades designed to capture the attention of young readers, and perfectly enhance this story of resilience and embracing our true selves. Reviewed by @KidsLitIsLit, January 26 2021 “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches” ... the wise words of Ms. Dita Von Teese and the inspiration for this children’s book, Just Peachy. This was such a lovely read about self acceptance when facing rejection and losing - a lesson adults and children alike need reminders to reserve grace for. When better to mentally start preparing children than ASAP at storytime? Beyond the important nuggets of wisdom embedded in this pretty pink package was all around fruity fun my kids loved, I think my daughter rubbed the cover for 5 minutes saying it felt like a peach too! Thank you so much to the gracious @michaela_skilney for sending us sweet Dita’s story from all the way down under! |

“Mummy, this book even feels like a peach!”... the words of Miss 4 when she first picked up this treasure of a book! Definitely not the most important thing about the book, but it certainly set the scene for a charismatic, and deeply thoughtful read! Self-acceptance is the key theme of this book. Being happy with your individuality, resilience and empowerment are also at the forefront. Such huge messages for a book targeted at children, and it does so in such an entertaining and engaging way. Dita ballerina has a passion for dancing, and when world-renowned dancer Ms Von Teese comes to town, the dainty peach wants nothing more than to please her and join her troupe! When things don’t go to plan, Dita learns some valuable lessons from her fruity friends and family. Michaela’s use of rhyme adds to the musical and artistic feel of the story. Vikki’s gorgeous illustrations capture the emotions of the book perfectly! Both had Miss 4 in a trance throughout our read. She even picked up subtle details that gave her an insight into the character’s feelings. I implore you to check out @michaela_skilney! Michaela is a writer, editor and mum, but most importantly, she is a genuinely kind and lovely individual. She wrote this book to make a difference, to help kids (and adults!) see that we won’t always please everyone in life, and that’s ok. Her website also has free colouring sheets with illustrations from the book. This is a book you will read again and again! Thank you to @michaela_skilney for kindly sharing this book with us. We were so incredibly lucky to sent this book directly from @michaela_skilney herself! The book begins with a teaser of the story and an iconic Dita Von Teese quote : “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who doesn’t like peaches.” This book follows the story of Dita - a very cute little peach who LOVES to dance. Dita’s dream is to dance with Ms Von Teese, who is a world renowned dancer. Unfortunately for Dita, things don’t go according to her plan, but she ends up with something far more important ... a lesson in self-acceptance. Written in rhyme, this gorgeous and very unique tale teaches children to be unapologetically themselves. Milo loves this book! |
